Dear Sir / Madam,

Since the dinner invitation is at the own behest and volition of A out of his friendly affection for B, A cannot recover the expenses from B for failure to attend.

If B has contributed his share for the dinner, it would automatically be forfeited, with B having no right to claim refund from A for B's absence.
