in case the property is self acquired, the court cannot compel your father in law to maintain but you can file a complaint under domestic violence act and seek residence orders for yourself and for your children to stay in that house. this way you can atleast get a house to stay in and also start working simultaneously. in case its a joint family property, your children have all the rights in the property and they may seek partition.
