Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in India

Credit card outstanding default

We are NRI's staying abroad since June 2002. In Jan 2009, we got a letter from HSBC Mumbai at our India address that we have a outstanding balance in our credit card since June 2002 & we were threatened legal action. We called up the concerned bank person & was told we have an OS of INR 70,000 to be cleared. However he is not replying to our question of why we were not told in 2002 itself about this when he had our India address even then. Also they are not giving us the last statement in 2002 to prove the OS. Please advise if this is legal of the bank to not send us any notice for 7 years and then send one threatening legal action. We have now received another notice saying they are going to send the ''collection agents'' after us which looks like a veiled threat. Our parents are staying at the address which the bank has on its records and we are scared that they might threaten our parents with these so called ''collection agents''. Please advise what we can do. We do not want to make payment until they furnish clear evidence which they are not ready to do. As per our records, we cleared all outstanding before leaving India.
