You can seek an adjournment by filing an application in court with reasons, as to why you want one. If it is flimsy, the application will be rejected. However, adjournment applications are very commonplace, and there is no great difficulty in obtaining it.
I agree with my colleague, Mrugank Patnaik, Advocate, about the procedure for the same.

by filing a petetion under section 309 of criminal procedure code,in writing the reason of seeking adjournment.court may permit.
