Dear Tanmay,
You have not mentioned the place where this incident was happen. There is a specific law in every state of India in case of intentional cutting of trees without any reasonableness or justification. If we talk about Maharashtra law which is applicable to the whole state of Maharashtra and in under Sec 21 of the Maharashtra Preservation of Trees Act, the punishment for cutting of trees is a fine of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 and imprisonment ranging from one week to one year.
