Legal Question in Family Law in India

Change of religion

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am 30 years old married lady.I had converted to Islam from Sikhism at the time of marriage; about 3 years back. My new name is Hena and earlier name was--name removed--Jyot--name removed-- But all my documents like degree, passport, voter id card have--name removed--Jyot--name removed--as my name. Now I am confused as to what should be my name legally. Hena or--name removed--Jyot--name removed-- Will I have to change my name in all my documents? Please advice.

Jeevan

Re: Change of religion

You are entitled to continue with your original name despite change of religion. The two things are not inter-connected. However, if you want the new name to be in your documents, you may be entitled to apply for name change as per procedure prescribed by filling up requisite forms after giving a public notice in news papers.
