Legal Question in Family Law in India

Dear Lawguru,

[Married for 3 years under Hindu marriage act].

Can you please tell me if in-laws have any legal right to keep bride's jewelery( given by bride's parents, husband, in-laws and other relatives in marriage).

In the situation where bride herself has given the jewelery to in-laws to keep in safe for temporary period of time and return it when she wants.

What legal action can bride take if in-laws don't return it upon asking ?

thanks for help.

Your case falls u/s 406 IPC.

You have to just report the police and they will arrange everything to get your jewelary back.

coz the gifts presented to the bride at the time of marriage is included as her own articles.

in case its an issue of jewelry only, you may ask your elders to intervene for return of jewelry and in case the same is not returned, you may approach the crime against woman cell and file a complaint for breach of trust.
