Legal Question in Family Law in India

My father passed 5 months ago. We are 2 divided brothers with a family of 2 kids. Now, my fathers property will be owned by my mother. As of now its not transfered. I heard people saying the procedure has to be completed within 3 months of my fathers death other wise it will be lost. Is it true?
