Legal Question in Family Law in India
Hi, I am about to get married in couple of months time. The final talks for an arranged marriage are on. Me and my family are very clear that we don't want any kind of dowry. We have seen a lot of false cases of 498A put on people around us and them suffering a lot cause of this. Is there any protection that is in law that some one who has not taken any dowry at the time of marriage or neither intends to take any is protected? Is there a way out?

Yes, there is a protection from dowry harrassment; but that is not the only problem we create for the newly weds; If you exchange affidavits with the party about marriage expenses and gifts, your liability may be limited for return of dowry.
However, you may still be liable for 'cruelty' and 'domestic violence' if you do not create a cordial atmosphere for the girl and start any kind of harassment. 498-A primarily covers cases of "cruelty" when the bride is tortured in her matrimonial home by the husband and his relatives. Your good behavior is the ONLY guarantee of protection from 498-A.
I advice that you arrange her a separate bank locker for her and never operate it your self.
