If they are willing to give appropriate compensation, even if that may lesser than her entitlement, it may be better to settle the dispute amicably.

However, she is entitiled to initiate criminal prosecution of the boy / his family for any kind of cruelty committed by them. The provisions of Section 498-A have been made specially for protection of women from cruelty by husband and his family. You may also seek adequate compensation under DV law.

no court sessions are not ugly for girl. DV act is a strict act but instead of spending on litigation if the compensation offered by them even if less is adequate then it is better to accept the same.

your sister can file a complaint under Domestic Violence Act and demand her rights viz. residence, maintenance, compensation, restraint orders against husband from relinquishing his rights etc....and for that your sister needs to be a bit bold and able to face the objections raised by the opposite party. there is no mud slinging as such but the boys side would try to put their version and build up a defence. in case your sister is afraid of facing the truth or fight the falsity, she may choose to settle for whatever is given to her by boyz side.
