Legal Question in Family Law in India

My wife and myself are living separately from past 1 year and decided to file for Divorce by mutual consent. She told she would like to do it at her place of work as it will be convenient for her and I agreed. When she sent me the draft petition, her lawyer had prepared, I got surprised as she has asked for a huge sum as one time alimony which I don't have means to pay. I was surprise because she never mentioned about the alimony amount in past. Now since I don't have the means to pay the amount, I would like to know what could be the next step she can take and what options do I have. I would also like to know if we don't agree on a alimony amount and decide to contest divorce, in whose place of residence the case could be filed. Currently we are living in separate states and we are Hindus. Also the marriage was registered in my native but the last place were we cohabited is the city were she is staying currently.

Thanks in advance.

See first of all you can have divorce even at her place of residence also. Secondly regarding the amount of alimony what Ill suggest you is to have a word with your wife and try to negotiate the amount and come up to some agreeable figure which is comfortable to both.
