Interest on maintenance of apartment

We have a flat in Mumbai, the society is charging interest on the outstanding maintenance. Can they do that? Kindly advice

Interest on maintenance can be charged, it depends on the bye-laws and also the agreement between you and the builder.

Interest on arrears can be charged.
