Legal Question in Tax Law in

Sir

I am a retired WCL employee. I received a lumpsum amount on my retirement from which I invest more than Rs. 200000 in mutual fund in the year 2006-07.

I received a query from income tax department to submit pan no. and income tax return if any on 30/04/2009. I didn't submit the same. And now in the month of august I received a notice to present in the Income Tax Office on 16/08/2010, but I did not present there. In the above notice it is mention to submit proof of ITR submission proof of tax payable and copy of bank statement, it is also mention that in case of absence action will be taken as per Income Tax Law. In the notices there is no mentioning of Section.

Sir I do not have any income except some bank interest which is nominal.

You are requested to advise me what should be done.

Thanks

Irfan Khan

You haven't mentioned the amount of lumpsum and the source of benefit, however assuming its from gratuity and pf,you are supposed to show the same thing to the ITD as you have received notices but skipping to reply the notices which you received tends to an impression of tax evasion.
