name changes

Okay~here is the situation. My son's father had his name added to the birth certificate when he was 5. His name was the legally changed on the birth certificate and no copy of the ORIGINAL exists Well, we never had his name changed under social security. Well, he is 19 now and can't get a job because he has a birth certificate under one name but his name for ss is another. I have a passport from when he was 2 under the original name but that's it. Now, when we went to get the name changed on the ss card, Indiana ss office said he has to have a legal document from the court stating that his name has been changed. Now, he has been one person since he was 5 and in kindergarten and I was assured that his name had already been legally changed when we added the father's name to his birth certificate. Is a birth certificate NOT a legal document these days? I do have the birth certificate I was given in the hospital~you know the one with the seal and his footprints and my thumbprints but that is all that exists. I'm not sure where to go from here and I don't think we should have to go to court to change something that was changed 14 years ago. I'm at a loss.

"I was assured that his name had already been legally changed when we added the father's name to his birth certificate. . . ." Find the person who made this assurance to help you resolve this problem. Here's the simple answer to the problem: no matter what anyone else says, you do what the Social Security Administration tells you to do, or you lose. Good luck.
