Legal Question in Business Law in Indiana

accussed of spreading a rumor

I was taken in a room at work and accused of spreading a rumor of a female team member having nude photo's in her car.

They said they did not care if it was true. I told them I had no knowledge of this matter. They said 2 other team members gave my name. I am innocent. What legal protection do I have? can they punish me for something I did not do?

Re: accussed of spreading a rumor

Obviously, someone is lying. My guess is that the liars are the people who confronted you in the little room, not your team members. This is an interrogation technique sometimes employed by law enforcement investigators -- throw accusations at a person and see if anything sticks. You will probably hear nothing further. You could sue their pants off (libel and slander) if they fire you for something you did not do. But first, take the matter up with the EEOC, so some investigating can be done into whether there is some hanky-panky sexual harrasment involved in this affair. Good luck.
