Foreign patent wanting to sell product in US
my friend, in germany, has patented a product in germany. now this person wants to sell their invention in the states. do they have to specifically apply for a US patent? what would be a good starting point?

Maybe.
International treaties and conventions may allow for the enforcement of the German patent in the U.S. However, it is certainly safer to apply for an American patent.
You can start either with a patent attorney, which I am not, or directly with the Patent and Trademark office, which has a website (www.uspto.gov).
