Legal Question in Business Law in Indiana
Is there any legal obligation or recourse that can actually be taken against somebody who simply is a reference on a loan application ( not a cosigner)?

Any attorney will say the answer is no - unless the reference engaged in some kind of fraud in connection with the loan application. Consult with an attorney in your area for specifics.
