Any attorney will tell you to speak with your state's labor or employment department, and they will investigate. Many so-called independent contractor arrangements are held to be disguised employment relationships. The employer doesn't want to pay its required share of unemployment and social security taxes, so they call it you an "independent contractor." You can also consult with an attorney in your area for specifics, but the state employment agency is the best starting point and costs nothing.
