Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Indiana
Recording roommate with webcam.
I share a dorm room with my roommate. I also have a webcam that I use to videoconference. Sometimes I leave this webcam running. One of the programs functions is to stream live video to a (non advertised) website and it saves snap shots every 30 seconds of what is broadcast (no audio is broadcast).
When I was gone one weekend, I left on my webcam. My roommate used my computer, without my permission, searched my computer and came across the snap shots. He demanded I remove the images. Do I need to delete the images? I do not sell these snap shots, and they are just backups of the streaming video feed. He continues demanding I remove any images of him. Do I comply with his request, or since the webcam is on my computer, on my side of the room, can I leave the pictures?

Re: Recording roommate with webcam.
Your roommate has an expectation of privacy in a space he legally occupies and pays for. You have no right to intrude upon his privacy with your technology for any purpose if he objects. He has a right to occupy the space free from spying in any form.
You are well advised to remove the images of him from your system, and to take necessary action to see that no more are created without his consent.
