My father sold a family heirloom to someone who caught him off guard. We want it back . The transaction took place about 48 hours ago. Is there any action that can be taken?

No way to answer the question without certain facts. Was your father mentally competent? Is he easily confused due to his age? Was the transaction patently unfair? Was the exchange fair or was there some kind of fraud, or did he sell something that was very valuable that he only got a small amount of money for? And was the sale to a family member? A friend? A stranger? All of these facts come into play. You really should seek legal counsel for the answers to this.
