Bar adding tip on unsigned credit card receipt

I recently went to a restaurant/bar. The bartender told my friend and I that in order to open a tab he needed a credit card. I offered up mine. We paid cash before we left the restaurant. 2 weeks later a charge was on my card for $45 from that restaurant. They received a copy of the receipt with about 15% added for a tip which made the total $45 and signed W/O. I sent it to fraud and was not charged in the end, but it left me with 1 question. Is it legal for a bar to add on a tip to an unsigned credit card receipt? I'm sure they have alot of heavy drinkers that come in and forget to sign, but by no means should that give them the power to choose the amount of the tip.

Not enough facts to make a good call on what appears a very questionable practice but you can call your credit company and dispute the charge. That is probably a more efficient means of dealing with the problem.
