Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

Bills while in jail

My daughter has been in jail since 9-1-06 and I've been checking her mail for her. What do I do about the bills she has, they are too high for me to take over payment. Do I call the various credit card, cell phone people and let them know she's in jail or just leave them alone. She may be in jail for a long time as she was on probation when she got arrested again. If they revoke probation she could be gone for severa years. The attorney is also going to try and get it court appointed for in-patient care for drug use but she doesn't have insurance and no job, who pays for that?

She is 21 and has not lived with me for several years.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Bills while in jail

Your daughter's bills are her responsibility, not yours, whether she is in jail or not. You have agreed to collect her mail, and that is all. Ask your daughter what she wants to do about the bills. I don't think it would advantage her one bit to tell the creditors that she won't be able to pay because she is in jail. In any case, it is not your problem. Deliver the mail to your daughter and leave her problems for her to deal with as she sees fit. Good luck.
