Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

name on car loan not on the title

My husband went with his mother a few years ago to purchase a vehicle as a birthday present to his father. Since his mom couldn't be approved for a loan, he signed for the vehicle. We found out recently that his name is the only one on the loan, but his name is not on the title. The title is in his parents names. Is this legal?
