Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

Cease and Assist letters

Mother in law is 81. Lives on SS check only. Lives in Gov Sub. retirement apt. She fell a yr ago and broke her leg. Was in nursing home for 3-5 mo. We found she had more than 1 credit card and huge debits. She was unable to keep up with the payments. Borrowing from one to pay another. We were instructed by the nursing home to stop payments. She is being herrased by bill collectors now. We have sent letters to all her creditors explaining why payments stopped and when that did not work we sent Cease and Assist Letters to all. Some have stopped calling asking for payment, some have not. She is now suffering from depression and is very upset that she can not pay her bills. This is not how she wanted it to be. Of course, we could not understand why creditors would give her such high credit allowances when she lives on just a little over $1,000 a mo. Do you have any other suggestions? We have tried the avenues we know about with little success. Thank you so much for your time.

Re: Cease and Assist letters

The best bet for your mother-in-law may be to file a bankruptcy petition. It will stop the creditors and remains available to those who need it ... despite the credit industry's occasional statements that bankruptcy is no longer available.
