Closing Credit Card Accounts after Divorce

After a divorce is final and all credit card accounts are paid in full, how does an ex-spouse cancel the accounts when both names are still on the account?

Re: Closing Credit Card Accounts after Divorce

Good question. I don't think there is any real formal or legal procedure to do it. Just notify each creditor in writing that you are to no longer be held responsible for debt incurred after the date of the divorce. Request your name be taken off of the accounts (Ideally, the spouse who continues with the creditor would get a new card and card number) and attach a copy of your divorce decree showing that this is what the court ordered. Make sure you do it in writing to the address customer service gives to you and make sure you follow up.
