Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

My divorce was final Jan 21, 2011. We filed private and did not have attorneys i gave him the house, and most belongings therein. We have a "gentleman's agreement" that my ex husband will pay my charge card bills up to $5,000.00, plus one of two student loans. He agreed to pay the higher one of something like $6,400.00 while I took on the lower one of around $3,600.00 something or another. He is a private contractor in sales so money to him is feast or famine. He needed to use my shell charge card for gas and did take out enough to pay his household bills for a month. I need to be able to move forward in my life now and have met someone that doesn't want the use of charge cards at all. I cannot file bankruptcy for another year an half at least. My ex was great with the wheeling/dealing am sure you can imagine. I now have a $10,000.00 medical bill that is rising as we speak, the student loans, plus the charge card depts that I took with me when i left him and what has been added since the divorce. My now soon maybe to be hubby wants me to get a loan for all bills he will co-sign, and i will pay off quicker i hope so we can set a wedding date. My ex doesn't seem to want to be in any hurry to get things worked out. Even if I do not remarry, i do feel i need to get a grip on these bills. What if anything can I do to protect myself and get myself away from my ex husbands controlling grip? I now am at his mercy so to speak till i am free of his controlling my finances. Please advise!

Sincerely,

Angela R. Reed

Your situation is way too complicated for a short answer or a quick fix. You need to sit down and have all of your debts and obligations reviewed by an attorney specializing in debtors' rights.
