Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

My fiance' and I have been putting of marriage due to old debt for child support. He is paying his back debt through the court system however we have been told that the state can take my retirement and savings for his debt if we get married. We are trying to understand if this is reality since he did not participate in my retirement fund or savings.
