Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

My mother passed away 3 weeks ago. She left everything of hers to me including the house. She owes alot on it. A good friend of mine said not to tell the mortgage comapany, because i do not have good credit and i will lose the house. Is this true, and how long until the mortgage company will find out? Thank you
