Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

My question is that I paid a debtor $300 in August, I was unaware that the debt owed went to a collection company prior to August. The debtor processed and took that $300, yet according to the collection company I still owe that $300. What if any legal ground do I have?
