Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

Sold a puppy on a verbal contract. He was sold based on four payments, one each payday. First payment received, second payment made on a closed account. I was babysitting the puppy for the buyers when I received notice that the check was NSF. I did not return the puppy. My question is this: No refunds was the agreement. Can I take this party to small claims court for the returned check. I have lost money since they kept the puppy over the xmas sales holiday when prices are higher and now the puppy is 15 weeks old and harder to sell. The DA won't take on a hot check case because I have my property back. Do I have a case in small claims court? Thanks.
