Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana

My son recently moved out of his apartment that he shared with a friend. His friend neglected to pay the bills and my son was forced to foot the bills alone which is why he came to the decision to move out. His friends mom helped his friend pay the rent and now she is hassling my son for reimbursement. What legal right does my son have?
