Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Indiana
The transfer of debt upon marriage
Over a period of 2-3 years I paid a contractor to do work on some of my rental properties. About 95% of the work was done but I was billed for the full amount. I paid this person $700 to purchase 4 windows to be installed which haven't yet. When asking about them I get the run around. In the meantime he married one of my tenants who is in the Section 8 government program. They maintain seperate homes but she wants to trasfer her Section 8 assistance to his house. My question is this-''Did she assume her husbands liability to return either the windows (I don't trust him to install them) or my money.'' If I can attach her name to this debt it gives me alot of leverage concerning her continued partipation in the Section 8 program

Re: The transfer of debt upon marriage
No, an individual does not become obligated to pay another's debt just because of their marriage.
