Line-ups are rare in criminal cases; usually an identifying witness already knows the person, so a lineup is meaningless.
Photo lineups and in-person lineups are used when there is not that prior knowledge of a person's identity. Failure by the police to do that can affect the ability to obtain a conviction, but is best for defense counsel to get all the facts and then advise you.
