Attorney - Client confidentiality

Is it Legal for a Judge to make a phone call to a defendants Lawyer and question the lawers secretary about a defendants bill while the defendant is on the witness stand under oath and in open court?

The situation described seems a bit out of the ordinary. Aside from the basic facts given,what other facts may exist would go a long way to help understand this. It is also not known from the brief account given, if this was done over the objection of the defense attorney and if any information was obtained. If such information was obtained, there may a question as to how it impacted the case if it did. I would urge the defendent to discuss the issue with his or her attorney and possible options. However, a body for judicial ethics does exist for the purpose of reviewing any acts of judges which may be questionable. This body could make a determination if such action was proper or not.
