Legal Question in Criminal Law in Indiana

case: intimidation over an internet commerce

i have been accused of writing Paypal a threat of death and have spoken with detectives from my local law enforcement (mistake). i believe someone used my computer and my email account to make these threats and now they are of course thinking i did it. i spoke with an attorney and they acted like it was not as big of a deal as what i think it sounds like . my question is : not having alot of money right now, do you think it is wise for me to go into debt to get myself an attorney that is going to charge me $500 right form the start to get things rolling and then i am sure it will be much more later on. or, should i take an attorney from the state and let them pay for it? i have NEVER been in trouble like this before so i really dont know anything about getting a lawyer and i dont want to get ripped off but i also dont want to go to jail either. ANY advice at all you can give me would be great. good day

I used to be a public defender, so I know from experience what you're in for. Generally, you will be more happy with an attorney of your own choosing. You will get more personal attention from an attorney you pay. Public defenders are typically overworked because they have a very high caseload. Many are good lawyers, but are not usually able to give you much personal attention. Also, the Court picks your lawyer, not you, so if you and your lawyer don't get along there's nothing you can do about it.
