Legal Question in Criminal Law in Indiana
I have court in a few days for an illegal possession of alcohol citation that I received in December. I am 18, was not arrested, and have no criminal background. What can I expect in court and what are the possible punishments?

You're always going to better off speaking with a lawyer you works regularly in the court you're going to appear in even if you don't end up hiring him or her to represent you. Your citation is really a summons to appear in court for a class C misdemeanor. In Indiana a class C misdemeanor is punishable by up to 60 days in jail and up to a $500 fine. Some prosecutors will allow you to pay a diversion program fee, take a counseling or education class on the hazards of underage drinking and after a period of time of not getting arrested will dismiss the case against you.Community Service may or may not be part of such a diversion. Again a lawyer can help advise you what is likely to happen in your particular case
