how do i expunge my criminal record and can it be done for free

If you do not use a lawyer, it would be free. You will have to determine whether your offense is one thatcan be expunged and then follow the procedures and requirements of the statute.

Adult criminal cases do not qualify for expungement. Basically you will need a governor's pardon to accomplish this.
