Legal Question in Criminal Law in Indiana
Felony Reduction
I was convicted of a theft charge (bounced check). That is the only major trouble I've been in. It was about 5 years ago. Time has passed, and I'm interested in getting into a law enforcement related career, yet having a felony conviction is somewhat of a hex. i was told I could petition the court and have it reduced to a misdemeanor. What would this require?? Would it show as a felony reduced? I served my two weeks in jail, did my community service. I can get character references from high ranking police officials in my area, if that would be helpful to my cause. Any info would be appreciated...

Re: Felony Reduction
The best thing to do is to sit down with an attorney in your community. Many times these things can be done, but only with the agreement of the prosecutor. Usually a judge will go along with that, but a local lawyer will have the best perspective.
If accomplished, it will be a misdemeanor on your record. There is no one place to go which is "official" when it comes to your criminal record, so you may have to show proof of the misdemeanor status if a future employer inquires.
Good luck.
