Legal Question in Criminal Law in Indiana

I have a friend that was involved in a tragic accident earlier this year. Him, his girlfriend and a friend had been out drinking and on the way home the had an accident. My friend's girlfriend died in the crash. The other passenger had minor injuries, my friend was lifelined to the hospital. He had bleeding on the brain, a liver laceration, a shattered ankle and several fractured vertabrae. Not even 24 hours after being released from the hospital he was arrested, while still in the back brace. Since being in jail (3 months now) he has not been able to follow up with the Neurologist or the back doctor. The only doctor he has seen has been for his ankle. His lawyer says she can't get anything done but I find this very hard to believe. I know he did wrong by driving under the influence but you would think that the county jail would not want to be responsible for any permenant damage caused by lack of medical care. He's just a 21 year old kid. Is there any thing we can do?
