I would like to find out if a certain lawyer has a federal law license to defend in federal court.

I would first suggest the direct approach. Ask the attorney, and if you have doubts, ask to see proof. If this would not work for you, then I would suggest calling the court clerk in the Federal District Court involved. I see no reason why the clerk would not check the rolls of attorneys admitted to practice in that court for you. Finally, if neither of these approaches would work for you, you might try contacting the state bar association with your question. In Illinois, the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission is located in Springfield, and may be helpful. Good luck!
