Legal Question in Criminal Law in Indiana

Minor in Consumption in Indiana

My son was ticketed for MI Consumption. He is 19 and a student at college in Indiana. From what I had been told this would be up to $500 / 60 days in Jail. I didn't go with him to court yesterday expecting just a fine. He calls me after hearing and tells me it could be $1000 or 180 days. He waived his right to court appointed lawyer (didn't expect to need one) pleaded guilty. would a judge considering jail time for a 19 year old really allow him to waive an attorney? Would they send him to jail at all? He just started college and we need to know what to expect (we can still get college money back but all will be lost a month from now when the sentencing date comes. A fine is more than punishment enough for this offence. Any good advice would be appreciated.

Perhaps you'll understand your son's lack of qualification to practice law. It was VERY foolish of him to not hire an attorney.

Even if he had to settle for a court appointed attorney, he probably would be better off that trying to practice law on his own.

I recommend that he hire an experienced attorney to help him through this mess that he seems to have made worse. We can help him with this. Call us at 1 866.766.5245

He's not going to jail under any circumstances, but he will eventually flunk out of colege if he's not smart enough to get at least a court -appointed attorney.

He should ask for one BEFORE he's sentenced. There's still time.

Here's the story in Indiana where I also practice.

If a kid comes in front of a judge without a lawyer wearing blue jeans and a tee shirt featuring his favorite rock group, the judge quickly concludes that the child is not taking the charge and the court's time seriously and he will impress the youngster never to do that again.

Court appointeds are not expensive - maybe $150 for the whole deal. I charge much more.

Why would you let your kid piss away thousands in tuition because he thinks? he's a lawyer.
