Unfortunately yes that sort of matter can remain on your record now. Indiana and Virginia are both part of the Interstate Driver's License Compact, an agreement between the most states to share information about certain types of convictions including Drunk Driving (DUI and DWI or as we refer to it in Indiana OVWI) convictions.

Since you as a resident of Virginia 26 years ago had a drunk driving offense that was reported to your home state of Indiana which suspended your license here.

You may need to consult both a Virginia attorney to address and resolve the matter in Virginia and then an Indiana attorney to help you get reinstated here in Indiana.
