Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

Name Change problem

After divorce & harrrassment, I had lawyer file restrainng order and name change to change surname. Through miscommunication, name change never became legal. Due to moving, I did not realize this, and have been using what I thought to be my legal name for 19 yrs. Have filed taxes, have bank accounts, etc. Dept of Motor Vehicles is threatening to invalidate my licenses because my SS# doesn't match name. Soc. Sec. Admin won't update name without court document verifying name change. After 19 yrs, I have nothing in previous name. Do I have to file for name change, or is there a way to legally validate name by usage? Dept of Motor Vehicles wants verification of identity within 30 days.

Re: Name Change problem

What a mess!!! The only way I know of to correct this is to file for a name change again. You need to do this asap and if possible obtain an extension from BMV as it will take you at least 60 days to get this through. There may be another way, however it is too complex to discuss in this forum. Feel free to contact me. Good luck.
