Child adoption

My wife and I have been taking care of her neice for sevsral years now. I was wondering if the mother is willing to sign her over to use if that would be enough to adopt her on. Thanks Jake

You still need to account for the father - If he is deceased, then the mother's consent is all you need. If he is living and paternity has not been established, he will be entitled to the statutory notice (published if you don't have his address). If he is living and the parties were divorced, you need to give him the same notice but have the judge determine that his consent is not necessary because he has not had a meaningful relationship with the child for at least a year or more.
