Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana
Child Custody
My brother in law is getting ready to have a baby girl. He is 19 and his girlfriend is 17. They are not married nor do they live together. His girlfriends grandmother is abusive to her and her brother and will not let them leave. My brother does not want his daughter there. The grandmother is saying that he has to sign over his fatherly rights and if he doesn't she herself will put the baby up for adoption against the father and mother's will. She is also saying that he cannot visit his daughter nor see her being born. The mother of the baby, his girlfriend, wants him at the hospital but she is also underage. What exactly can or cannot the grandmother do in this case? I mean does she really have a say so? She is only a great-grandma to the unborn baby, my brother in law is the father. She won't even let him visit or accompany his pregnant girlfriend to her doctor visits. The baby is due very soon. What can we do? Our whole family would love to see the baby, but this grandma is making it impossible. To the unborn baby she will be the great-grandmother.

Re: Child Custody
Your bro in law has rights, including the right to have custody of the child once formal paternity is established. He needs to contact an attorney ASAP.
