Re: What can I do if child support is too high?

Everything starts with a petition to the Court. The guidelines are a presumptive amount only and either party is entitled to make an argument that the guidelines are unfair in their particular situation. You will need to point out why you cannot afford to pay the guideline amount, how as much as the guideline amount would not be devoted to the children if you were still married, and from that hope you will convince the judge of the merits of your argument. But, first you need to file a petition with the judge of your support court requesting a modification and avoidance of the guidelines in your case. There are no guarantees that your petition will be prevailing.
