claiming a child at tax time

if i raise my child by myself and was not married to the father, does the father get the right to claim him on his tax return. also he does not pay child support, except every now and then.

No, absent a court order.

Re: claiming a child at tax time

You get the tax exemption unless the paternity order says different. Even then most paternity orders only allow the tax exemption when the payor is current.
