court appointed attorney

im out of work at the moment and I have to answer to the court as why I havent paid child support and the courts want to find me in contempt. If I go and ask the courts to appoint me an attorney can I go to jail. Or will they continue. Thank you for your time it is very much appreciated

Re: court appointed attorney

This is not a criminal case, so you will not be appointed an attorney. You need to bring proof of your attempts to find work and explain why you lost your last job. You also need to go to the Indiana Judicary Web site and download and complete a Petition to Modify Child Support and file it in court. Unfortunately, modifications are not retroactive to the date that you lost your job, so you will still owe the back child support. However, the modification should at least prevent you from falling further behind. The next time that you get fired, you need to file a Modification immediately. good luck
