Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana
My daughter from my first marriage is 16 and would like to change her last name to her step father's. Not adoption, but to legally change her last name. Would she be able to do this without his permission, or knowledge as he lives out of state? He is abusive and she is frightened he would retaliate.

Why would she want to change her last name to the same as an abuser. He is not even given notice. As far as I know the only notice is by publication. You will have to obtain the consent of her biological father or have a contested hearing.
