Legal Question in Family Law in Indiana

I am an expecting mother and the father of my child is from mexico and is not yet a legal citizen of the U.S. we would like to put his name on the birth certificate but since i have government assistance (TNAF, and medicaid) i am being told that if i put his name on the birth certificate or give our daughter his last name then the government will try to go after him for child support and find hes not a legal U.S. citizen and he will be deported... can the government really go after him for child support if i dont agree to it?
